The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company was founded in Akron, Ohio. The first factory opened 2 years later and employed 12 men. Firestone began producing its own tires in 1903. By 1906, sales passed the million-dollar mark and the brand was on its way to becoming a household name. In 1908 Firestone released the first tires to feature non-skid tread designs. All highway tires produced afterwards use tread patterns for traction.
